Abingdon United Women's FC to open new pathways in exciting new future

Paul Corrie21 May 2024 - 17:06

The commitment sees an introduction of an U10s, U14s, U17s and U18s team at Abingdon United Women's FC.

Abingdon United Women's Football Club are delighted to announce the introduction of an U10s, U14s, U17s and U18s team, in an exciting future for the club.

This will open new pathways for girls football at the club, creating new opportunities to develop in football.

First Team Manager Paul Corrie expressed his excitement for the future at Abingdon United Women's, with new opportunities arising for young players across Oxfordshire.

Corrie: "Since agreeing to join the team in preseason last year my main focus has been to develop players, provide structure and professionalise the women’s set up as much as I could. After events unfolded and being asked to take charge of the first team in November this meant I was able to have a complete say in the direction that Abingdon United Women’s FC was able to go.

"The potential this club has is something else, especially the women’s team and having that tier four FA Women's National League status, which really is a pull for new players to come and join us.

"Having Sam Froud in as my assistant has been a blessing. The guy really does have massive potential and we wouldn’t have been as successful without him by my side and what was great is he could also identify this potential too and has a real keen eye on focusing on the future of the women’s set up at the club.

"The development team since I took over have been thrilled by the communication between both teams and seeing the flow of players not only stepping up to the first team, but also supporting them with experienced players to help develop their own team on the pitch. Having this clear pathway working both ways for me is vital to the success of the women’s set up, not just to one particular team.

"Of course for myself, the first team in the National League winning is the most important part and gaining a positive result in our games is number one priority. For the development team, ensuring the players all gain vital experience in playing and starting to enter that game management experience is certainly the start of senior football for them.

"The next step in this journey was certainly being able to support the development side and introducing a pathway for them. Over the past six months we have worked even closer to find that pathway and can now announce not only are we introducing an U18s side, but also an U17s, U14s and U10s team.

"For the club and for the female side of football, this is fantastic as now we will have the potential of an U10s player with a clear pathway all the way to the senior team. This is an amazing opportunity for any young players in the Abingdon & Oxfordshire area.

"All the staff at Abingdon United are really excited for the future and can only see this growing as the seasons go on. Personally, I am privileged to be apart of this journey and can’t wait to see it all pan out."

Each team that has been introduced at the club have also had their say on what lies ahead at the club.

U10s and U14s: "We're excited. As coaches we see a lot potential with this move for the girls and also the club as a whole.

"The Under 14s team have been playing this last season at Under 13s and up a season in the U14s league. They are an amazing group of girls and we as coaches have been looking to best support their development and pathway to adult football. Abingdon United Women's FC does this. Our current under nine girls team were also looking to establish itself with a pathway and get game playing again."

U17's: "As a team we are all local Abingdon girls so it’s very exciting to be joining the United family. It’s the start of something special and we can’t wait to get started.

"Abingdon United Women's over the last few years has grown amazingly well, especially with this season’s addition of a development team and the promotion to the FA Women's National League for the first team. This club is going places and we are proud to be part of pushing female football forward."

U18's: "After meeting the other teams I've been very impressed and it's great they share my passion for coaching. It's really exciting that I can keep learning and everyone is happy to talk about football as much as me and share the same idea to make the players the priority.

"I think we're set up now to hopefully attract talent and give players the time to improove and ensure we can support them while they move from youth football into the senior sides. I've seen first hand that this can be difficult and sometimes frustrating so as a parent and a coach I think the future is very bright."
