Abingdon United WFC19 Aug - 16:32

United face the Saints U21s in the FAWNL Cup Group B on Wednesday evening...

The Yellows host Southampton U21s tomorrow evening, in the opening matchday of the FA Women's National League Cup.

The competition sees a new format come into place, with a group stage which sees United enter Group B with the Saints PGA, Portishead Town and Exeter City. Each team will play eachother once, with United's away fixture coming at the end of September at Exeter.

After 4-1 victory at the weekend, Chris Smith's side come into this game full of confidence. A double from Mollie Dyer and a goal each for Mimi Hodges and Nell Boxall saw Abingdon claim an opening day three points against Bournemouth Sports.

The visitors Southampton U21s reached the Semi-Finals of the FAWNL Plate last season, losing to Cheltenham Town at that stage. They beat Norwich City, AFC Wimbledon and Ashford Town on their way to the final four.

The PGA side also won the Hampshire FA Women's Senior Cup against AFC Bournemouth in 2024/25.

A challenging encounter awaits for Chris Smith's side, but one that will make for an entertaining evening at The Northcourt.

Pre-Match Thoughts | Chris Smith

Chris Smith spoke after our win against Bournemouth Sports on the challenge ahead in the FAWNL Cup.

He said: "It's a great squad. We know they (Southampton) have got a good team. They'll be hard to beat and move the ball really quickly.

"We'll need to recover right. We'll need to try and get a player or two back from injury.

"We'll try and make sure we can give them a game, we can cause so many teams problems.

"We did it against league champions last year. They won't be coming to us for us to roll over."
