WINCHESTER HOLD ON TO TOP SPOT

WINCHESTER HOLD ON TO TOP SPOT

Richie Bourne3 Sep 2012 - 21:40

In the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West on Saturday, Winchester City held on to top spot when....

...three second half goals gave them a 4-1 win at Clevedon Town.

Michael Charles scored twice for City, the first from the penalty spot, with Jamie White and Tom Dunford adding the others.

Poole Town and Hungerford Town stayed level on points with the leaders with a 3-1 win at still pointless Yate Town and a 2-1 home victory over Mangotsfield United respectively.

Having felt elated after thrashing Poole 5-0 in the FA Cup seven days earlier, Yate were utterly dejected as they left the pitch soundly beaten by the same opponents at Lodge Road to leave them bottom of the table with no points from three games.

Matt Groves received two yellow cards to become the fourth Yate player to be sent-off already this season and sum up a miserable afternoon. By that point, though, Poole were well on course for a victory that maintained their unbeaten start in the league after a second half brace by Steve Brown, sandwiched by a Tyrone Mings goal for Yate, added to Michael Walker's 12th minute opener.

Hungerford beat Mangotsfield United 2-1 at Bulpit Lane with goals from Mark Draycott in the 37th and 75th minute – the second from the penalty spot – after Neil Arndale had given the visitors a 14th minute lead, also from the spot.

North Leigh, a goal behind at the break, scored 6 minutes into the second half from Jon Else to take a point from a 1-1 draw at Merthyr Town

Wimborne Town scored just before the half-hour mark through Jamie Davidson to secure a 2-1 home win over Swindon Supermarine, while Cirencester Town scored a goal in each half from Jamie Reid and Nathan Collier to complete a 2-0 home win over Didcot Town.

Evesham United went down 1-0 at Abingdon United with the winning goal coming from Luke Carnell 3 minutes into the second half.

Taunton Town scored three times after the interval to complete a convincing 4-1 home win over Cinderford Town, who had led through Wilson from the 10th minute.

Rodney Marsh, Chris Ingram with two and Craig Herrod with the other were the Peacocks` marksmen.

Bishops Cleeve were beaten 3-2 at home by Tiverton Town, whose Owen Howe bagged a brace and Joe Bushin the other in reply to Deaton and Alex Sykes, while Sholing, ahead after 10 minutes through Tyrone Bowers, scored a penalty on the half-hour from Barry Mason to complete a 2-0 home win over Shortwood United.

In the day's other game Paulton Rovers took a first minute lead but previously pointless visitors Bridgwater Town levelled by the interval and added three more in the second half to complete a resounding 4-1 victory with goals from Dave Pearse, Tim Legg, Joe McLennan and Steve Fitzpatrick.
