Abingdon United WFC are delighted to announce that Sam Keen is to become our Assistant Manager ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Currently our Strength and Conditioning Coach, 'Keeno' joined The Yellows in the summer of 2024, having been in previous footballing roles before beginning his journey in Abingdon.
A fan favourite and likeable character across the club, Keen was pivotal to United Women retaining their FA Women's National League during the latest campaign, raising the standards and professionalising the conditioning of the players. He is also a personal trainer outside of the football club.
A year on from joining, Sam will now follow in the foot steps of Sam Froud in becoming Chris Smith's number two, whilst continuing his role as Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Keen said: "I was shocked, delighted and honoured to be asked by Chris to step up to be his Assistant Manager for next season.
"It was a very easy decision to make as this group of players and staff are an absolute pleasure to work with.
"I'm already looking forward to assisting Chris in another season for Abingdon United Women in the National League with this talented group of players."
This is another step in preparations for the 2025/26 season, following the appointment of Reuben Hazelby as Performance Analyst, whilst Chris Smith and Wayne Tingey will also continue in their roles for the upcoming campaign, with Smith's title changing from Head Coach to Manager.
Smith said on Sam Keen becoming Assistant Manager: "I’m absolutely over the moon that Sam has agreed to be the AUWFC assistant manager from the start of the 2025/26 season.
"Sam was asked to join Abingdon United WFC on a whim, since that point Sam Keen has epitomised what the club is about. He is extremely passionate about the players, about the club, but also about the effect that he has on the group.
"His mantra and philosophies of hard work beats talent, matches everything we preach as individuals and as a group.
"My personal relationship with Sam is something you very rarely get in Football, but also in life. We are able to have in-depth conversation, whilst maintaining full support for what we’re trying to do and I can’t wait to have him as my number two for the new season."
More announcements on the new season will be made in due course, including pre-season fixtures, staff updates and squad announcements.
