Match Report | United take another step in their preparations in Hampshire

Abingdon United WFC4 Aug - 18:56

The Yellows were 2-1 winners against Winchester City Flyers on Sunday afternoon...

United Women were victorious in their penultimate pre-season fixture against Winchester City Flyers.

After having a week break from match practice, The Yellows travelled to Hampshire to face the Southern Region Women's Football League Premier side, and the opening minutes were evenly matched.

Chris Smith's side had some defending to do early on. Poppy Wannell contributed well on the defensive side, whilst a backline of Kara Howes, Libby Gilmore, Millie Hodge and Trialist B were keeping the hosts at bay.

In the 8th minute, United took the lead. Good work from Erin Hartigan allowed the winger to put a ball into the area from the right, and a lay off from Wannell at the back post allowed Anais Harris-Beechers to fire into the top right corner, for her first goal in Abingdon United colours.

From then on, United had a bit more control of the game, and just before the break would double their lead.

After playing a key role in the first goal, Erin Hartigan placed an effort into the top left corner, following a well timed ball over the top by Molly Lygo.

Into the second half and Winchester City Flyers had a goal back within seconds of kickoff. A ball down the left caught out the United backline, and a shot into the bottom left corner couldn't be kept out by Trialist A.

The second half was much more relaxed than the first, but The Yellows continued to create good openings. A ball through by Holly Sellwood found Issy Bradley, and after finding a way past two defenders could only hit an effort at the goalkeeper.

Both teams kept pushing, with Trialist A making two brilliant stops to deny an equaliser. There would be no more goals in the game, with The Yellows running out 2-1 winners.
