Match Report: Seven-goal thriller in the final game of the season

Abingdon United WFC28 Apr - 10:31

Despite going ahead three times in the game, United lost out on the final day of the campaign in our dedicated Her Game Too fixture.

Abingdon United Women played out a goal fest with Keynsham Town, in a 4-3 defeat in the final game of the season.

The game was dedicated to Her Game Too, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at The Northcourt.

Chris Smith made four changes to the side that faced Southampton. Molly Lygo returned to the side after serving a suspension, whilst Freya Gilmore, Erin Hartigan and Mimi Hodges also came into the starting lineup.

It was a quiet start to the game, with Hartigan and Lygo both causing problems, but without leading to an opportunity.

With ten minutes played, Hodges found space in behind and struck towards goal, but it was well saved by the Keynsham goalkeeper Emily Kemp. Three minutes later, United took the lead. A ball forward by Poppy Wannell found Molly Lygo, who placed over the goalkeeper, to give United the advantage.

However, seconds later it was all-square, a pattern which would continue throughout the day. A ball into the area was headed home by Beatriz Kretteis, making it 1-1 early on.

Five minutes later and United took the lead again. A long pass was flicked on by Anais Harris-Beechers, before being tapped home by Lygo for her second of the game.

The Yellows were pushing for a third before the break. A free-kick by Mimi Hodges was saved well with ten minutes of the half to go.

Four minutes in additional time of the first half and Keynsham were back level. A corner kick from the right was smartly finished by Kretteis for what was also her second of the game.

The second half started just like the first, with Abingdon going back ahead. A powerful run by Mimi Hodges after a ball forward from Lygo led to an opportunity one-on-one, and she fired past the keeper to make it 3-2 just five minutes into the second 45.

There were changes for United in the second half, including Charlotte Deeley, who was making her final appearance in football. She came on for Kara Howes in the 56th minute of the game to a brilliant reception.

Keynsham would level the game again on the hour mark. It was Kerry Bartlett with the goal to pull the visitors back for a third time in the game.

Caitlin Crierie was on form throughout the game as always. A brilliant stop just seconds after the goal denied Keynsham going ahead.

However, with 20 minutes left to play, the visitors did finally got ahead in the game. A ball into the area wasn't cleared off the line in time, with Bartlett scoring her second of the game, earning Keynsham Town all three points in Oxfordshire.

Defeat for The Yellows, but a successful day off the field, with 160 in attendance for our first ever dedicated Her Game Too fixture.

United's Player of the Match was Molly Lygo after scoring twice and gaining an assist for Mimi Hodges' goal.

Abingdon United finish the season in 9th place in the FA Women's National League Division One South West, with 21 points from 22 games, and will compete in the league again next season. The outlook of the teams in the division will be announced by the league in due course.
